THANK YOU for your incredible support of Luna & Rose. As a planet focussed business that is always looking at ways in which we can minimise our impact on the planet and give back through our products and purchases, we were absolutely STOKED with our Green Friday efforts for 2020.
Together, we managed to plant 322 trees in Indonesia to help restore areas in which deforestation has taken over the homes and habitats of the endangered (and awesome!) Orangutans.
Why Tree's you say?
That's a great question.
After oceans, forests are the world’s largest storehouses of carbon.
They provide ecosystem services that are critical to human welfare. These include:
- Absorbing harmful greenhouse gasses that produce climate change. In tropical forests alone, a quarter of a trillion tons of carbon is stored in above and below ground biomass
- Providing clean water for drinking, bathing, and other household needs
- Protecting watersheds and reducing or slowing the amount of erosion and chemicals that reach waterways
- Providing food and medicine
- Serving as a buffer in natural disasters like flood and rainfalls
- Providing habitat to more than half of the world’s land-based species
Incredibly Interesting Tree Facts:
- 80,000 acres of the worlds forests disappear from the Earth everyday
- The world's rainforests could completely vanish in 100 years at the current rate of deforestation
- 28,000 species are expected to become extinct in the next 25 years due to deforestation
- 12.4 million acres of forests are permanently converted to growing commodity crops such as Palm Oil each year
- 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions are the result of deforestation
- 22kg or 48lbs of CO2 is sequested by 1 mature tree each year!!
- Forests provide jobs for more than 13 million people across the world
In addition, 300 million people live in forests, including 60 million indigenous people. Yet, we are losing them. Between 1990 and 2015, the world lost some 129 million ha of forest, an area the size of South Africa. When we take away the forest, it is not just the trees that go. The entire ecosystem begins to fall apart, with dire consequences for all of us.
I highly recommend you to go and watch the most recent David Attenborough documentary on Netflix. He puts the current global climate crisis into perspective and easily digestible snippets for us, including actionable steps for us all.
We are so proud to have such a caring, kind, conscious and planet-focussed community along with us here at Luna & Rose. Thank you for your support, for planting tree's with us and being aware. We're in this together x
