5 minutes with Kiwi Travel blogger & Creative guru 'Sophocles'

When we first met Sophie back in 2012 it was like I met my future self in my younger body. Clear to say we had a fair few things in common. From launching her own label at just 21, to traveling the world by herself to NYC where she currently lives and works in the digital industry, Sophie is one go-getting lady that doesn't let anything get in her way of world domination. Between plane rides and cross time-zone messenger chats, we managed to catch up with Sophie for 5 minutes and hear more about what motivated and inspired the beautiful soul behind Sophocles Adventures.

We follow you on instagram & your life looks like one big holiday, I’m jealous & want to know how to live like that! Can you tell us how you got into blogging?

I love taking photos and making memories for my future self so I started writing so that I could document about the adventures I had. I ended up getting a lot of questions about the places I had been, where to stay, where to go and loved being able to share this with others and help them shape their own travels.

What do you love most about what you do?

I do a lot of solo adventures and because of this, I’ve learnt a lot and been able to travel to new places on my own, experiencing it in my own way. This is my favourite part about it because traveling solo allows me to learn and grow and it’s really shaped who I am.

Whats your favourite beach you have ever been to?

My favourite beach would just have to be Praia Do Camilo in the Southern region of Portugal. I’ve heard its jam packed here in Summer but because I visited in off season, I had this whole beach to myself which you have to walk down a huge staircase to get to. It’s my favourite sunrise spot in Portugal and has rolling waves and caves to explore.

What does your Summer playlist lookalike?

I’m really into jazz music so I love to listen to soul and jazz as it makes me happy and is easy listening. I also love really chilled out music like Kevin Garrett, Bon Iver and Third Story.

Talk us through the last place you went on holiday…

I just got back from Japan and absolutely fell in love with it. It was my first trip here and a place that I’ve always wanted to explore. The whole country for me was a strong 10/10 and everyday held a new adventure. The culture was amazing, including all the food and what I loved most is how polite, genuine and patient Japanese people are. I squeezed as much as I possibly could into ten days and am already looking forward to the next time I get to visit.

Top travel tip?

There’s not too many travel trips I have that apply to every location but the ONE thing that I always do is I ‘save’ places on google maps which links up to my phone. This is particularly amazing if you don’t have wifi because you can download the maps offline and still be able to navigate your way to the places you want to visit.

I also always travel with tonnes of water, lip balm and an eye mask- I can’t travel without these things anymore, they’re my absolute essentials. 

Where to next for the Sophocles adventures?

I’m heading to South Africa in two days which I’m super excited about. I’m going with my sister who is my favourite travel companion and I’m looking forward to spending some sister time in this new destination.
