THE STORY BEHIND THE SAINT PENDANTS

Why Saints you ask? We caught up with our Founder, Rosie, on where it all started & how this design concept began.

Where on earth did the concept to design jewellery connected with the history of Saints? 

It all started with a wild Aunty and a trip to Italy…

I grew up with an Aunty who constantly called upon Saint Anthony. Lost keys, lost shoes, lost spatula while cooking—whatever it was, she’d always say, "Saint Anthony, help me find this!". At the time, I thought she was just a little eccentric (love you, Aunty Di!), but years later, when I found myself in Italy, I started to truly understand the power of Saints.

I discovered how many there were, each with their own meaning, their own story. At the same time, one of my best friends asked me to create a Saint Christopher pendant to keep her safe while she traveled. That’s when the obsession began. Fast forward to today, and we now have 27 Saint Pendants, each a meaningful talisman designed to guide and inspire through life’s wild ride.

Right! I love giting jewellery but, prior to launching Luna & Rose, I often found myself trying to find special pieces that had more meaning to them rather than a beautiful style. For example special stones (Such as Pounamu, in NZ) that had depth or connection. 

Each Saint Pendant has its own unique significance. From Saint Raphael for healing, to Saint Gerard for motherhood, to Saint Fiacre for garden lovers, these pendants honor different talents, needs, and life moments. It's such a lovely way to wear something beautiful but has a deeper meaning & connection. Our Saint pendants serve as daily reminders of inspiration, strength, protection & courage.

Every Saint Pendant comes with a special card inside the jewelry box, sharing the Saint’s history and meaning. Whether gifted as a token of love, a symbol of strength, or a lucky charm, these pendants carry deep significance for each person who wears them & those who gifted or purchased the pieces for them. 

WHY ARE PEOPLE DRAWN TO SAINT PENDANTS?

Jewelry is often more than just an accessory—it’s a way to hold onto memories, people, and places. Our Saint Pendants are chosen as gifts for those going through tough times, celebrating milestones, or simply as a personal reminder of guidance and protection.

During the Covid pandemic, we saw an incredible increase in purchases of our Saint Raphael pendant, sent to frontline medical workers as a token of appreciation and protection. Likewise, Saint Gerard has become a popular Push Present for new mothers. The beauty of these pieces is that they are both personal and universal, making them timeless keepsakes.

Beyond meaning, the handcrafted artistry makes each piece truly special. The unique detailing, organic feel, and intricate carvings set them apart from mass-produced jewelry.

 

THE ART OF CREATION: FROM SKETCH TO PENDANT

Creating these pendants is a labor of love.

I design each piece with the Saint’s symbols, posture, and details, but the real magic happens when Putu, our incredibly talented wax carver, brings them to life. He hand-carves each design in jewelry wax, transforming my 2D sketches into intricate 3D sculptures.

Once the wax model is perfected, we create a mold for production. From there, our team of silversmiths carefully refines each pendant, adding final details, loops, clasps, and polishing. The pieces are then sent for gold plating (for gold versions) or oxidization (for silver). We also offer solid 9kt, 14kt, and 24kt gold versions upon request.

This process ensures that every pendant is unique, timeless, and made to last.

 

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SAINT PENDANT?

With so many meaningful designs, how do you choose the right one? Rosie suggests:

"I always tell people—let your intuition guide you. Often, the right Saint finds you before you even realize why."

HOW TO STYLE YOUR SAINT PENDANT?

Rosie’s layering tips:

• Wear your Saint Pendant on an 18” chain and layer it with a longer chain (20” or 22”) for a chic, textured look.

• Stack multiple Saint Pendants together for a meaningful, personalized touch.

• Pair your pendant with a chunky chain from our Soho Collection to add contrast and dimension.

Rosie’s favorite combo? "Saint Anthony on a 20” chain, Saint Christopher on an 18” chain, and the Washington paperclip chain for balance."

 

THE EMOTIONAL POWER OF THESE PIECES

Jewelry isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about feeling connected.

One of my closest friends battles anxiety and never leaves the house without her  Saint Dymphna necklace. When she feels overwhelmed, she holds onto her pendant and takes five deep breaths, which she swears helps her regain calm. Having something tangible to hold onto—a piece that carries meaning—can be incredibly grounding.

During the pandemic, we received countless messages from customers asking us to include handwritten notes with their Saint Pendants. From frontline nurses, to new moms giving birth alone, to people feeling isolated from loved ones, these pendants became symbols of love and connection in uncertain times. It was emotional, beautiful, and reminded me why I started this collection in the first place.
