Books are one of the most powerful tools, in my mind, to escape from the busy 'reality' of our daily doings. They're a way to escape into another world for a moment in time, even if it is only for 10 minutes! They're an amazing way to learn more about another culture, travel different areas of the world, learn more about a certain period of time, a different perspective, different humans....the list goes on. They're also a fantastic way to forget about your own life and escape into a romantic reality of possibility!
Our first Book Club book is 'Water for Elephants' by Sara Gruen. I read this because it was the only book on my parents book shelf while I was visiting them on Summer holidays recently. But like all good books worth sharing, I simply couldn't put it down. Initially I was a little put off by the cover (an ancient looking circus situation) and I wasn't convinced it was going to lure me in like I needed it to but about 40 pages in, I was set. I was suddenly an addict drinking in the weird and quirky world of the main character, who finds himself accidentally joining a travelling circus.
Yeah, sounds a bit random I know, and the book is fiction, however, Sara did extensive research across the US to write this book and incorporated many of the true events and histories of the actual 'Real Life' Travelling Circuses that travelled across the US during the 1930's.
Personally I'm a little partial to the gypsy life, so learning more about how such an insanely large set-up, including carriages and carriages of animals such as Elephants, Lions and the rest (Yes, my heart broke for the livelihood of these guys) to me it was a fascinating read even just around the logistics of how so many people (and animals) can move en-masse and make a living doing so. These travelling circuses of the 1930's sure make our 'Pop up' circuses of today look a little less.... spectacular!
Mix in a love story, heart strings with the beautiful human / animal relationship and as I said, I couldn't put this book down. It's definitely not my usual 'style' of book that I would choose, but I am so glad I picked Water for Elephants up and gave it a chance. I felt more enriched and educated on this snippet of our global history that I would otherwise, never had an opportunity to learn about!
Overall, I give Water for Elephants an 8/10. It was an easy read, entertaining, not too long, always interesting and a great mix of love story vs drama. So, have you read this book? I would absolutely LOVE to hear your thoughts on the book in the comments below.
